A few weeks ago I came across some KMART tea towels that were on clearance for $1.00. They featured a funky cat print that I knew feline obsessed Miss 6 would absolutely adore so I grabbed a bunch and put them away for future crafting with no firm idea what they would become.
Not long after I came across the Ellie & Mac Upcycle Challenge which required taking an old garment and making it into something new. Having recently done a post-christmas wardrobe clean out and op shop run I didn’t really have much in they way of unused/unwanted garments so I started to think outside the square and upcycle something else instead…..PING! Talk about a light bulb moment! Those funky cat tea towels I got on clearance?!?!? Hellooooo upcycle!!!!
A quick search of Ellie & Mac’s extensive pattern catalogue I soon realised that the Kids A-Line Skirt would be the perfect one for this project. So armed with my sewing machine, some buttons & 4x Kmart Tea Towels I was off to my sewing machine.
The first obstacle I encountered was realising that the back pattern piece of the skirt was wider than the tea towels. A quick trim to remove the side seam from two of the tea towels and then a quick run through on the overlocker to join two tea towels soon fixed this problem. When cutting I simply placed the joined seam on the centre fold line of the pattern. The rest of the pattern was cut as per pattern pieces and instructions found within the tutorial.
Construction was a breeze with easy step by step instructions included in the purchase of the pattern. The most time consuming part was hand sewing the buttons.
And voila, like magic 4x kmart tea towels have turned into a funky cat print skirt! Check out the project video on instagram.

Happy Sewing
